In his speech to the Security Council during its last session, Secretary-General António Guterres said that the only way forward is to adhere to negotiations in light of the two-state solution, with two states living side by side in peace, security and mutual recognition, with Jerusalem as a shared capital based on the relevant United Nations resolutions and previous agreements. Guterres appealed to the two parties to immediately halt the violence, indicating that the United Nations is actively working to encourage all parties to initiate an immediate ceasefire. He condemned in his speech the targeting of civilians by both sides, adding that journalists should be allowed to work without fear or harassment, in an expression of concern over the destruction of media offices in Gaza. He also said that all parties must respect international humanitarian law and international human rights law. For further details, click here
