Researcher Shpend Kursani published a research article in the Geopolitics Journal titled: “Costs of International Recognition: Palestine’s and Kosovo’s Struggle with Negotiated Statehood.” According to the auother, there is agreement that universal recognition comes with multiple advantages for recognized States.
The aim of this article is to explore the advantages of recognition while focusing on its costs. This is done through an analytical based approach which views state contenders’ international environment as part of ‘negotiated statehood.’ This article argues that recognition may come with a price tag. The argument is built using the cases of Palestine and Kosovo and their search for self determination while identifying their practices while seeking recognition. Finally, the discussion in the article puts forth future recommendations for the concepts of self determination and state recognition.
