The University of Helsinki has published a master’s thesis by researcher Lotta Mäkelä entitled “The Right to Water and the Benefit of the Human Rights Approach to Palestinians Living under Occupation in the West Bank of the Occupied Palestinian Territories.” This thesis examines the human right to water in the West Bank in the occupied Palestinian territories under the doctrines of international humanitarian law and international human rights law, which are seen as constituting the law of occupation. The thesis focuses on the benefit of the human rights approach to water for the people living under occupation, in this particular the case of the Palestinians, and addresses the potential challenges and obstacles that are encountered when the two branches of international humanitarian law and international human rights law are applied in parallel in an occupation context and assesses the benefit of the human rights approach to water.
