Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, condemned Kosovo’s decision to open an embassy in the city of Jerusalem in violation of international law. According to Aboul Gheit, international law considers Jerusalem as occupied, and thus prohibits transferring embassies to it; only two countries have violated this international consensus regarding the opening of embassies in occupied Jerusalem: the United States and Guatemala. He also stressed that the Security Council resolutions are explicit in this regard, on top of which is Resolution 478 of 1980 which condemns Israel’s annexation of East Jerusalem and prohibits states from establishing diplomatic missions in the city.
