Amnesty International reported that the Israeli occupation police committed a range of violations against Palestinians in Israel and the occupied East Jerusalem; according to the report, the police launched a discriminatory crackdown that included mass arrests, the use of unlawful force against peaceful demonstrators, and the subjection of detainees to torture and other ill-treatment based on its hostilities in Israel, Gaza and beyond. The Israeli police also failed to protect Palestinian citizens of Israel from deliberate attacks by armed fanatic groups even when the plans were announced in advance and the police were aware of them. The evidence collected by Amnesty International provides a compelling picture of discrimination and excessive force used by the Israeli police mercilessly against Palestinians in Israel and East Jerusalem, said Saleh Hegazy the Deputy Director for the Middle East and North Africa at Amnesty International. Hegazy pointed out the Israeli police’s duty to protect all persons living under its control; whether they are Jews or Palestinians. Instead, Palestinians were the overwhelming majority of those arrested in the police crackdown after violence erupted in ethnically-mixed neighborhoods. The few Jewish citizens of Israel arrested by the police were treated more leniently, as Hegazy noted that fanatic Jews continue to organize demonstrations, while Palestinians face repression.
