On the eve of the Israeli elections, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, in an interview with the Panet news website, in response to a question whether he would accept the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside the state of Israel, that he “accepts the creation of a Palestinian state if control of security remains in Israel’s hands. Otherwise, Hamas [will rule the state].” He added that this means the sovereign security force must remain in the hands of Israel in the area between the Jordan River and the (Mediterranean) Sea.
