Several European countries, led by France, have expressed support for threats of punitive action in an attempt to deter the new Israeli government from implementing the annexation plan with the approval of Washington. The European Union is considered to be Israel’s largest trading partner, as it gives Israel a preferred trading position, and helps in funding and developing Israeli scientific research through the Horizon 2020 program. According to Haaretz newspaper, the proposed steps include announcing that Israel is prevented from participating in trade agreements with the union, and not receiving grants from the European Union or participating in other forms of cooperation with the bloc.
