German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said that his country considers that the International Criminal Court to not have a jurisdiction to investigate Israel over its violations in the Palestinian territories. “The German government’s position is that the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction in this matter due to the absence of Palestinian statehood,” Steinmeier said. He added, “the only way to establish a Palestinian state and define regional borders is for Israelis and Palestinians to engage in direct negotiations.” He added that it is up to the new chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, to decide how the investigations should proceed in line with the legal framework that governs his mandate.
