The UN has announced that former High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, will be apppointed to serve as a member of the International Commission of Inquiry on the human rights violations committed in the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel; the President of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan (Fiji), announced the appointment of Navi Pillay (South Africa), Miloon Kothari (India) and Chris Sidoti (Australia) to serve as the three members of the Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel. In late May, the Council agreed to open an emergency special session to investigate the violations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, as well as allegations of violations in Israel, during the aggression that was halted by the announcement of a truce on May 21. The investigators tasked with identifying those responsible for the violations will present their first report in June 2022. The 27 May decision allowed for the formation of the “International Independent and Permanent Commission of Inquiry” to examine the abuses of international humanitarian law and human rights in occupied Palestine. The resolution requests the Commission to consider “all the root causes of recurrent tensions, instability and prolonged conflict, including systematic discrimination and repression based on national, ethnic or religious affiliation.” For further details, click here
