Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that the Israeli air strikes which destroyed four high-rise buildings in the Gaza Strip during the last war in May violated international laws of war, and called on the Israeli military to provide evidence to justify the attacks. The organization also stated that although there were no casualties in the air strikes, the strikes damaged nearby buildings, left dozens of people homeless and destroyed dozens of businesses. “Illegal Israeli raids on four high-rises in Gaza City have caused severe and lasting damage to the countless Palestinians who lived, worked or profited from the businesses located there”, said Richard Weir, a crisis and conflict researcher at the organization. HRW added that it found no evidence that the Palestinian militants whom Israel claims were involved in the military operations had an immediate or long-term presence in the buildings when they were targeted, and that even if these militants were using the buildings, making them legitimate targets, Israel is obligated to avoid inflicting disproportionate harm to civilians under the rules of international humanitarian law.
