The joint initiative of the International Crisis Group and the United States/Middle East Project (USMEP) to help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has published a report entitled “Three Pillars of a New US Approach to Peace in Israel-Palestine.” The report believes that the administration of US President-elect Joe Biden will bear the responsibility to mitigate the damage caused by former President Donald Trump’s destructive policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The challenge will mitigate Trump’s legacy without just returning things to the way they were before his election as president. Accordingly, the starting point for a new policy between Israel and Palestine should be based on the three pillars outlined in the report: Mitigate the damage of the Trump legacy and replace an emphasis on perpetuating the peace process with one centered around protecting the rights and well-being of people on the ground and desist from actions that enable and empower Israeli policies seeking to prevent any peace deal or a Palestinian state, and help facilitate and encourage the Palestinians to undertake their political renewal.
