On December 22, 2020, the Israeli Supreme Court, with an extended panel of 11 judges, considered 15 petitions against the racist “Nationalism Law”, which was approved by the Israeli Knesset in July 2018. These petitions were submitted by the High Follow-up Committee, the Joint List, Adalah, Local and social Authorities, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel, Arab and Jewish lawyers, and academics. It focused in particular on Article Seven of the “Nationality Law”, which states that “the state considers the development of Jewish settlement as a national value, and will work to encourage and advance its establishment and consolidation.” They also stressed that the application of this clause is problematic because it legally legalizes discrimination and in practice cancels a previous ruling issued by the Supreme Court in the petition of the spouse’s Iman and Adel Qa’dan, and the decision stated that allocating land to Jews only constitutes prohibited discrimination.
