The Israeli newspaper Haaretz has learned that Israel is preparing a classified list of hundreds of Israeli officials who may be subject to trial in The Hague for war crimes. This comes amid news that the International Criminal Court may open an investigation into war crimes committed in Palestine from all sides, starting with the Israeli military attack on Gaza in 2014, known as Operation Protective Edge. The list being worked on by the Israeli government includes between 200 and 300 army and intelligence officials, who can be arrested and tried for war crimes against civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The great secrecy surrounding the issue stems from a fear that the mere disclosure of the list’s existence could endanger the people on it. The assessment is that the court is likely to view a list of names as an official Israeli admission of these officials’ involvement in the incidents under investigation. The list includes Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu; former defense ministers Moshe Ya’alon, Avigdor Lieberman and Naftali Bennett; former Israel Defense Forces chiefs of staff Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot, and current Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi; and the former and current heads of the Shin Bet security service, Yoram Cohen and Nadav Argaman, respectively.
