On this day in 1948, the UNSC adopted resolution (54), calling on all Governments and authorities concerned to continue to cooperate with the Mediator with a view to maintaining peace in Palestine in accordance with resolution (50) adopted by the UNSC on May 29, 1948. As an issue of particular urgency, it orders an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the city of Jerusalem, effective 24 hours after the adoption of the resolution. It also instructs the Armistice Commission to take any necessary steps to implement the desired ceasefire. It instructs the Mediator to continue his efforts to disarm the city of Jerusalem, without prejudice to the future political status of Jerusalem, and to ensure the protection of and access to the sacred and religious sites and buildings in Palestine.
