At the “Reimagining International Justice: Lessons from Palestine and Syria” workshop organized by Justice Call organization (JC), hosting the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine Dr. Francesca Albanese, Law for Palestine emphasized the importance of the ICC while highlighting that it is not the only way towards accountability.
Hassan Ben Imran, a board member at Law for Palestine, participated in the workshop organized by the Justice Call organization, on the efforts for accountability and international justice, and the role the International Criminal Court (ICC) ought to play to protect human rights in the MENA region, held on two sessions in English on 16 and 17 November 2022 over Zoom.
Hassan spoke about the international accountability efforts in pursuit of justice for Palestine and what could be done. He emphasized that the ICC role, while being very significant, is not the only way for victims to achieve justice, pointing out towards the multiple of international and domestic mechanisms that should be resorted to; including the principle of universal jurisdiction.
The workshop was started with a keynote talk by the UN SR Dr. Francesca who introduced her latest report on Palestinian self-determination and spoke about the possibility and necessity of accountability to uphold international law so as not to turn it into an “empty slogan” rather than an authoritative reference point. In addition to Mr. Hassan, the workshop panel was attended by Anwar Al-Bunni, Executive Director of the Syrian Center for Legal Studies and Research, and Fadel Abdelghany, Executive Director of the Syrian Network for Human Rights. The discussion was introduced by Milena Sherin, lawyer at JC and Chair of MENA WG for ICC, and moderated by Sarah El-Taweel from Justice Call.
