Law for Palestine Obtains Accreditation from the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP)
Law for Palestine L4P (human rights organization officially registered in both the United Kingdom and Sweden), has received accreditation from the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of Palestinian people. The committee held its 407th meeting on July 13, 2022 which was chaired by Mr. Cheikh Niang, a diplomat and Senegal’s Ambassador of the United Nations, with the aim of considering progress in the implementation of its 2022 program of work.
Mr. Cheikh Niang recalled that there were 14 organizations that applied for accreditation by the Committee. After reviewing the applications thoroughly, the Committee Bureau had recommended to accept 3 organizations for accreditation as they had complied with the standards of the UN committee. Most importantly this included having concrete programs to uphold the principles of international law and ensuring the inalienable rights of Palestinians are being met, first and foremost of which is their right to self-determination. Finally, Member States were prompted to vote.
The Committee approved the accreditation of the three organisations recommended by the Bureau, including Law for Palestine. The committee consists of 25 Member States in the United Nations which are periodically elected, in addition to 24 Observer States.
In accordance with this accreditation, representatives of Law for Palestine will be given the opportunity to attend relevant international meetings and conferences held under the Committee, participate and make statements within discussions, submit reports and written statements for circulation among Committee Members and Observers. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to communicate and network with other partner organizations, discuss the organization’s initiatives and campaigns. Lastly, they will be invited to consult with Committee members when needed.
It is the responsibility of the Committee’s partner and accredited organizations to support the work and objectives of the Commission as defined in the United Nations General Assembly resolutions, to respect the Committee’s guidelines, procedures and practices, and to regularly report on the activities of the organization.
The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1975, and it renews its mandate annually ever since then. It is entrusted with making recommendations and programs related to enabling Palestinians to exercise their inalienable rights, such as the right to self- determination and Right to Return to their homes and properties. This is to be implemented without external interference, while carefully considering national independence and sovereignty. The Committee seeks to raise international awareness of the “Question of Palestine” and to strengthen international support and assistance to Palestinians. Additionally, it provides annual reports to the General Assembly on the implementation of its mandate. During its quarterly debate on the situation within Palestine, the Security Council invites the Chair of the Committee to provide the position of the Committee.
