UNSC issues resolution no. 49 on Palestine on this day
On this day in 1948, the United Nations Security Council issued Resolution No. 49, in which it called upon all governments and authorities to refrain from any hostile military action in Palestine. It became effective within the range of thirty-six hours after midnight New York time on May 22, 1948. The resolution calls on all parties concerned and the armistice committee to commence negotiation and maintain the armistice in the city of Jerusalem. It also gives directives to the Armistice Commission established by the Security Council in accordance with Resolution No. 48 issued on April 23, 1948, to submit a report to the Council on the extent of compliance with the two preceding paragraphs of the resolution. The resolution called on all concerned parties to facilitate, by all means, the mission of the United Nations mediator designated in the implementation of General Assembly Resolution No. 186 of May 14, 1948.
