A group of members of the US Congress submitted a memorandum to the US Treasury Department to close down organizations that financed settlements with hundreds of millions of dollars. The memorandum was formally signed by the Treasury Department, seven members of Congress asking the ministry to legally review the status of non-profit, tax-exempt institutions based in the United States of America that collect donations for building settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories. The memorandum demanded the closure of these American institutions and the prosecution of those responsible for them on charges of violating American laws; the most important of these is the Central Fund of Israel (CFI). The memorandum indicated that the fund played a key role in supporting and enabling the illegal Israeli settlement project and facilitating the commission of international crimes such as forced population transfer, illegal appropriation and destruction of property, while encouraging the governments of Israel to legislate discriminatory legal systems, military and housing in Palestinian lands and property, among other violations.
