Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attacked the determination of the Israeli Supreme Court to consider petitions against the “Nationality Law.” On December 22, the Supreme Court holds a hearing on the validity of the Basic Law on Nationality – a fundamental law that the Likud led with the support of an absolute majority of members of the Knesset and constitutionally anchors the foundational characteristics of the Israel state as a national state. “The court does not have the authority to discuss the validity of fundamental laws because the fundamental laws enacted by the Knesset are the highest constitutional norm in the country and the most fundamental expression of the principle of government of the people and the principle of the rule of law,” Netanyahu said. Netanyahu added, “Contrary to the misleading claims made against it, the law does not harm any one’s rights but rather anchors the national identity of the state as a Jewish state, its symbols, language and deadlines, and its commitment to the Jewish people wherever they are as the “state” of Israel is the national home of the Jewish people, and therefore the only Jewish people can enjoy their national rights.” To check the news, click here
