New Book Launched on Ending Impunity and Protecting Palestinian Bedouins from Forced Displacement
A new book titled Ending Impunity for International Law Violations: Palestinian Bedouins and the Risk of Forced Displacement has been published, offering a timely and in-depth academic investigation into one of the most pressing yet underexamined aspects of the Israeli colonial presence in Palestine. The volume was launched by co-editors Dr Alice Panepinto (Queen’s University Belfast), Bana Abu Zuluf (Maynooth University), and Dr Brendan C. Browne (Trinity College Dublin), alongside contributors Dr Ahmad Amara, Dr Triestino Mariniello, and Dr Munir Nuseibeh. Both Dr Panepinto and Dr Nuseibeh serve on the Board of Trustees of Law for Palestine.
The book sheds light on a lesser-known yet deeply significant dimension of Israeli colonial policies: the systematic targeting of Palestinian Bedouin communities by the Israeli state and settlers in efforts to forcibly displace them from their ancestral lands. It focuses particularly on communities in the Central West Bank and Greater Jerusalem – among the most vulnerable in the Palestinian territory occupied by Israel since 1967 – and examines the issue through legal, political, and humanitarian lenses.
This edited collection represents a core academic output of the AHRC-funded project Palestinian Bedouin at Risk of Forced Displacement: IHL Vulnerabilities, ICC Possibilities (Ref: AH/T007540/1), which ran from 2020 to 2024.
At its core, the book addresses two fundamental questions:
-
What are the humanitarian vulnerabilities faced by Palestinian Bedouin communities, and how are these vulnerabilities produced or constructed?
-
How does prolonged impunity for international law violations contribute to ongoing protection risks for these communities?
Interweaving international law with field-based empirical research and interdisciplinary analysis, the book offers a comprehensive, law-in-context approach to understanding injustice in Palestine. Contributions from both Palestinian and international scholars draw from diverse fields – including law, urban planning, humanitarian and development practice, and international affairs -making this the first book-length, multidisciplinary analysis of the humanitarian vulnerabilities facing Palestinian Bedouins at risk of forced displacement.
