Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh called on Canada – represented by Foreign Minister Marc Garneau – and the international community to pressure Israel to stop its violations against the Palestinians, and to stop the policy of settlement expansion and land confiscation, especially attempts to expel Palestinians from their homes in East Jerusalem and the repeated incursions into their holy sites, and the systematic destruction of any opportunity to embody the establishment of a geographically contiguous Palestinian state, calling on Canada to recognize the Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital in order to preserve the two-state solution. Shtayyeh stressed the importance of serious international action, in light of the current political climate, to put forward an initiative to revive the political process, through the International Quartet and to add a number of concerned countries, to end the occupation and achieve comprehensive peace in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.
