Ardi Imseis, a professor of international law at Queen’s University, has announced the forthcoming publication of his book titled “The United Nations and the Question of Palestine: Rule by Law and the Structure of International Legal Subalternity.” This anticipated book is set to be released by Cambridge University Press in November 2023.
Imseis’s book delves into the intricate issue of Palestine within the framework of the United Nations. Palestine represents the organization’s longest-standing challenge, and the book critically assesses the tensions between the UN’s official stance and the requirements of international law regarding this matter. It sheds light on the various shortcomings in the UN’s approach to the question of Palestine and examines the far-reaching consequences of these failures.
The author goes beyond conventional perspectives on the UN’s commitment to international rule of law, arguing for the existence of an “international rule by law” paradigm. Imseis contends that this approach has led to what he terms “international legal subalternity” for Palestine and its people. Despite repeated pledges of justice through international law, “its realization is interminably withheld.”
It is noteworthy that this book is an expansion of Ardi Imseis’s doctoral thesis, for which he earned his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 2018. Previously, Law for Palestine had published an article summarizing and reviewing the key points of Imseis’s thesis.
