Researcher Doron Bar publishes a recent article in the Middle Eastern Studies Journal, titled: “The changing identity of Muslim/Jewish holy places in the State of Israel, 1948-2018.” This article examines the dozens of Muslim holy sites that have undergone Judaization and are now considered to be part of the Israeli-Jewish landscape. The paper studies three different periods of Judaization that occurred following the 1948 and 1967 wars. The transformation and appropriation of Muslim holy sites is associated with political, social, and religious changes that have taken place in Israel. These transformations took place in two different forms—the institutional and the popular—as both the Israeli government and worshippers took part in the conversions. The outcome resulted in the expansion of sacred spaces within Israel. For further details, click here
