Researcher Hedi Viterbo published a new book by Cambridge University Press entitled: “Problematizing Law, Rights, and Childhood in Israel/Palestine.” The book radically challenges the dominant narratives about law, human rights, and childhood, both in and beyond the Israel/Palestine context. The book also reveals Israel’s policy of using international law and children’s rights to hone and legitimize its violence against Palestinians. The writer explained the paths followed by the Israeli authorities in spreading the culture of law, rights, and childhood in general as a cover to consolidate, perfect, and polish the repressive Israeli policies. Thus, according to the author, Israel has used international law in its efforts to subjugate Palestinian minds, bodies, and wills; to limit the Palestinians to the legally stipulated childhood model that does them more harm than good, in a repetition of the Israeli security discourse. The book covers a wide range of issues and laws, including those related to youth, their rights and legal status; armed conflict and counterinsurgency; and (mis)treatment of colonial peoples, ethnic minorities, and non-citizens.
