Researcher Susan Pedersen published a new study in the International History Review Journal titled, “Writing the Balfour Declaration into the Mandate for Palestine.”
The Balfour Declaration was only one of several wartime statements by British officials about Britain’s future plans for Palestine. This article traces the steps taken to include the Balfour Declaration in the Mandate text and how it eventually came to secure the League of Nations Council approval. It makes a case for Arthur Balfour’s vital contribution to gaining American approval and overcoming French and Italian opposition.
