Researchers RonitLevine-Schnur, Tamar Megiddo, and Yael Berda published a research article in the Social Science Research Network titled: “A Theory of Annexation.”
This article discusses an essential component of contemporary international law which is the prohibition on annexation of a territory. However, annexation has not been precisely defined and it remains vague as to what counts as annexing a state. Therefore, according to the authors, it is crucial to develop a concept of annexation as this could help in understanding multiple international contexts such as Palestine and Ukraine.
This article puts forth a novel theory of annexation in two steps. Firstly, it shows the shared weakness between de facto annexation and illegal occupation which is referred to as an asymptotic argument problem. Secondly, this article draws on organizational theories—particularly New Institutionalism— to argue organizational changes may be evidence of shifts in sovereignty.
