Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Shtayyeh discussed with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio the political developments and the strengthening of relations between the two countries. Shtayyeh called on Italy to break the status quo by recognizing the Palestinian state, in light of the systematic destruction of the two-state solution as a result of Israeli settlement measures, and the decisions of the US administration that violate international law. The prime minister said, “this is the right time for the EU and its countries to fill the void left by the US administration in the political process by its bias towards Israel, by recognizing Palestine and launching an international conference to solve the Palestinian issue based on international law and UN resolutions.” During the meeting, Di Maio affirmed his country’s belief in the two-state solution and its endeavor to restore the political process to achieve peace in the region and establish the Palestinian state.
