The Municipal Council of Ghent, located in the Flanders region, decided to respond to an initiative by a number of Belgian citizens entitled “A Heart for Palestine” to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, by allocating an amount of 10,000 Euros for humanitarian aid. A statement issued by the municipality stated that violence in Israel and Palestine erupted in recent days without distinguishing civilian and military targets. There were many civilian casualties – especially Palestinians – including many children, and human rights were seriously violated, the statement added. The mayor and members of the Municipal Council expressed their solidarity with all victims of violence and condemned the attacks on civilians and civilian objects, called for respect for human rights and international law, and warned against the human suffering, especially on the part of Palestinians from shortage of food, medicine and even water.
