Saeb Erekat, Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, met with the representative of the European Union in Palestine, Sven Kühn von Burgsdorff. Shahat and Burgsdorff stressed that peace is based on ending the occupation and embodying the independence of the State of Palestine with its capital in East Jerusalem on the 1967 borders and emphasized on the rejection of the annexation and the apartheid regime. Erekat stressed that the European Union countries were required to recognize the state of Palestine immediately. Erekat also met with the Egyptian General Consul Mustafa Al-Shahat, and the two sides expressed a common position rejecting annexation and apartheid, and that peace requires an end to the Israeli occupation, adherence to the Arab Peace Initiative, and the embodiment of the independence of the State of Palestine with its capital, East Jerusalem, on the 1967 borders.
