Nikolay Mladenov, the Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, urged Israelis, Palestinians, countries in the region, and the international community to take practical steps to enable the parties to re-engage again in the peace process during his speech to the UN Security Council. “The Middle East Quartet – alongside Arab partners – and Israeli and Palestinian leaders, must work together to return to the path of meaningful negotiations,” Nickolay Mladenov told the ambassadors in his final briefing as Special Coordinator. Mladenov appealed to the countries of the world to provide their support to UNRWA, and said: “The Agency is not only a lifeline for millions of Palestine refugees, and fully engaged in the fight against COVID-19, but is also critical for regional stability.” He added that developments related to Israeli settlements are continuing, with the expansion in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, saying that they entrench Israel’s occupation and undermine the prospect of a two-State solution. He added that “The advancement of all settlement activity must cease immediately”, stressing that they constitute a flagrant violation of United Nations resolutions and international law.
