The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Michael Lynk, called on Israel to immediately release the Palestinian administrative detainee Maher Al-Akhras, who has been on hunger strike for months, in light of reports that he has been in a state of severe weakness in the hospital, and the likelihood that he will suffer from great physical failure. Al-Akhras was administratively arrested on July 27th, to start days after his open hunger strike, in protest against his unfair administrative detention. The Israeli forces accuse him of belonging to Islamic Jihad, a charge he denies. Lynk said the Israeli forces that arrested and detained Al-Akhras did not present any convincing evidence at an open hearing to justify their claims that he posed a security risk. The Israeli Supreme Court rejected his petition for his release three times, most recently in mid-October. He also called on Israel to end the practice of administrative detention, according to which people can be detained indefinitely without trial, sometimes for years. To check the news, click here
