The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said during a high-level open debate in the Security Council that the disregard for children’s rights amid war and upheaval “is shocking and heartbreaking,” Guterres urged warring parties to prioritize the prevention of violations against boys and girls, and called on countries to support their protection at all times. The Secretary-General referred to the grave violations committed by the Israeli occupation in its recent attack on Gaza, including the killing and maiming of children and denial of humanitarian access. Guterres explained that Palestinian schools and hospitals are being attacked, destroyed or used for military purposes, in addition to targeting educational and health facilities for girls. On the other hand, the Secretary-General referred to the violations by Palestinian armed groups in the recent war, represented by the recruitment of children in hostilities and other practices that endanger their safety.
