The United States of America opposed a statement by the UN Security Council on the aggression of the Israeli occupation on the Palestinian territories. The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting, based on a briefing by the United Nations envoy to the Middle East, Tor Wennesland, to consider adopting a joint declaration on the Israeli escalation in the Gaza Strip. It was reported that 14 members of the 15 members of the Security Council supported the adoption of the joint declaration in a way that could reduce tension. Members of the Council called for an immediate cessation of all acts of violence, provocation, incitement and destruction, demanding respect for International Humanitarian Law and the protection of civilians, while the United States opposed the release of the statement on the grounds that it did not see that contributing to de-escalation.
