The United Kingdom called the Israeli occupation authorities for an immediate halt to the immediate settlement construction in East Jerusalem and elsewhere in the West Bank. In a statement, the UK Foreign Office expressed concern about the Israeli occupation’s endorsement of the construction of 780 settlement units in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which is considered illegal under international law, undermined the possibility of a two-State solution and threatened any future peace negotiations. For his part, the lead spokesperson for the European Union, Peter Stano, said that this Israeli decision is contrary to international law and further undermined the prospects for a viable two-State solution. He called on the Israeli Government to suspend the draft resolution and stressed that the position of the European Union remained consistent: that settlements were illegal under international law.
