The UN affirmed that it closely follows the Israeli Supreme Court’s handling of the Sheikh Jarrah evictions case, where Palestinian families are being threatened with displacement by Israeli settlers unde the cover of Israeli law. Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesman for the Secretary-General said, “Our understanding is that a final ruling is expected later in the week. From our standpoint, what has always been our standpoint is that all settlement activities, including evictions, demolitions, are illegal under international law.” While OHCHR spokesperson Rupert Colville said if the eviction order has been issued and implemented, it would violate Israel’s obligations under international law, and it may amount to war crimes. The OHCHR called on Israel to immediately stop all evictions and review the laws to ensure that it complies with its obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
