The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, Michael Lynk, condemned Israel’s demolition of homes and properties of the Palestinian Bedouin community in Homseh al-Baqi’a, north of the Jordan Valley in the occupied West Bank. “As an occupying power, Israel is strictly prohibited from destroying Palestinian property unless absolutely required by military necessity during active armed operations. The forcible transfer of the residents of Homseh Al-Baqe’a is strictly prohibited as a grave breach and a potential war crime under the Fourth Geneva Convention.” He added: “This gradual appropriation of Palestinian land, along with the protection of settlements, is a further reinforcement of Israel’s de facto annexation of the West Bank.” The Special Rapporteur also appealed to the international community to take meaningful accountability measures to ensure Israel’s compliance with its legal obligations.
