The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philip Lazzarini, affirmed the Agency’s commitment to the rights and well-being of Palestinian refugees. “I am deeply frustrated by this vain episode of extreme violence that has claimed civilian lives, destroyed infrastructure and set Gaza back for several years”, said Mr. Lazarini. “Nineteen children out of 60 children killed in this conflict were going to UNRWA schools, and they were known to my colleagues”, he added. Lazzarini concluded his speech by calling on the international community to address the root causes of conflict, occupation and displacement, including East Jerusalem, Sheikh Jarrah and the siege, and Lazarini considered that any solution that does not target these problems is nothing but a mirage.
