The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) condemns the erection by Hamas of an underground structure, including tunnels, inside an UNRWA-run and operated school. For its part, Israel called for a halt to the financing of UNRWA’s infrastructure projects until the end of an independent investigation into the incident. UNRWA reiterated that its installations are inviolable at all times. “These actions also stand to compromise the safe return of children to their schools and scuttles the Agency’s efforts to open the schools on time,” the Agency said. The Agency also called on all parties to cease any activity or behavior that endangers beneficiaries and staff, and undermines the ability of UNRWA to provide assistance to Palestine refugees in safety and security.
