During its 74th session, the World Health Assembly adopted a draft resolution for Palestine, entitled “Health conditions in the occupied Palestinian territory, including east Jerusalem, and in the occupied Syrian Golan.” Some 83 members voted in favor of the resolution, which was presented by the State of Palestine, 14 opposed and 39 abstained. The Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine in Geneva, Ibrahim Khraishi, pointed out Israel’s violations against the Palestinian people in general, and against the health sector in particular. These violations included the ongoing attacks on health institutions and medical staff, the killing of doctors and paramedics, and the Israeli denial of Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances to save the wounded left bleeding until they’re killed. Khraishi pointed to the obstacles in facilitating the entry of essential and medical materials, vaccinations, and the movement of patients between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. He also referred to the policy of medical negligence against detainees in Israel’s prisons. He called on the General Assembly to put pressure on Israel to respect its legal obligations under the Constitution of the World Health Organization and the Fourth Geneva Convention.
