Yasser Arafat Foundation and “Horizon” Center for Political Studies and Media Outreach published a study entitled “ The US Diplomatic Presence in Jerusalem”, dealing with the issue of reopening the US Consulate in East Jerusalem, as announced in the election campaign for US President-elect “Joe Biden.” The paper sheds light on the history of the American diplomatic presence in Jerusalem since the Ottoman era, and the historical American political position on Jerusalem regarding the necessity of reaching an agreed-upon peaceful solution to the final status of the city, through President Trump’s decision to relocate the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. The paper recommends the need to work on reopening the US Consulate in Jerusalem as an independent mission of the embassy, by using all or some of the buildings that were subject to it before its acquisition from the US embassy according to Trump’s decisions, to restore balance to the US role in the peace process and to acknowledge the status of Jerusalem and its special importance in the quest for a just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
