Law for Palestine speaks to Hebron University students on prison escape from the view of international law
At the invitation of the Faculty of Law and Political Science at Hebron University, Ihsan Adel, President of Law for Palestine, spoke to students on the rules of international law and international humanitarian law that govern escape from prison. Adel highlighted in particular cases where prisoners of war (POW) attempt to escape from prison in areas of conflict and military occupation.
Dr. Mutaz M Qafisheh, Professor of International Law at Hebron University, started the lecture by stressing the importance of this hardly-addressed issue, which prompted him and the Faculty to organize this meeting with Adel following the latter’s publication of an article on prison escapes under the rules of international law. The article was published on Law for Palestine’s website.
The online meeting took place Wednesday, September 22, 2021, and was attended by nearly 70 students doing international law, international criminal law and human rights at Hebron University.
During the lecture, Adel noted that jailbreaks remain a highly controversial topic when it occurs in times of peace. However, in times of conflict and occupation, the rules of international humanitarian law provide that it can only be punished with disciplinary measures and only in extreme cases, Adel added. He also noted that some countries under their national legislation require that their soldiers try to escape if captured.
Whether the status of prisoner of war (POW) applies to Palestinian prisoners remains a topic of heated discussion, Adel noted, pointing out that he is writing on this particular issue with Dr. Mutaz M Qafisheh. Their research will be published this month by the Cambridge University Press.
