Researcher Nimer Sultany published an article titled: “The Question of Palestine as a Litmus Test: On Human Rights and Root Causes.” Nowadays, human rights discourse displays contradictions when it comes to the Question of Palestine. On one hand, Israel is acknowledged as an apartheid state and on the other hand, there is long-standing impunity as they are not being held accountable for their crimes.
This article argues that the Question of Palestine is a “litmus test” for international law and human rights. Secondly, the paper contrasts the legalistic and holistic approaches of international human rights organizations in their publications on apartheid, to highlight the ambiguities and limitations of apartheid’s application in the Palestine context. Thirdly, the paper looks into the limits of searching for the root causes of why systematic human rights violations occur.
