The Supreme National Committee for the Commemoration of the Nakba called on the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, to intervene promptly and ensure an international protection for Palestinians, and hold the Israeli occupation government and its leaders accountable for the crimes they have committed in the Gaza Strip by using excessive and lethal forces against innocent civilians. This was reflected in a note delivered by the Committee to the Director of the Office of the UN General Coordinator for the Palestinian territories, Michael Afrique, addressed to the Secretary-General, on the occasion of the 73rd anniversary of the Nakba. The committee called on the General Assembly to convene a special meeting on the Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip and the crimes of ethnic cleansing committed by the occupation government in Jerusalem, amid the recurring failure of the Security Council in issuing a statement on the aggression against the Gaza Strip because of the American rejection. The letter further added that the inability of the international community to compel the Israeli occupation to implement its resolutions to enable the Palestinian people to exercise their legitimate and inalienable rights to return, to self-determination and to establish an independent State with Jerusalem as its capital, encouraged the Israeli occupying state to continue to violate international humanitarian law and commit war crimes against the Palestinians.
