IEMed Announces Lecture on Palestine’s Maritime Rights Amid Israeli Control
Barcelona, 11 October 2025 — The European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed) has announced an upcoming lecture titled “Palestine’s Maritime Rights vs Israel’s Bully Take Over: An Exit Path”, to be held on 14 October 2025 at 12:00, as part of its Aula Mediterrània lecture series.
The event will feature Prof. Mutaz M. Qafisheh, a leading Palestinian expert in international law and professor at Hebron University. The lecture will explore Palestine’s long-standing struggle to assert its maritime rights under international law, particularly in light of the Israeli blockade of Gaza and broader issues of military occupation and ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Despite Palestine’s accession to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 2014, the enforcement of its maritime claims remains elusive. Prof. Qafisheh will delve into legal avenues for boundary delimitation and dispute resolution, contextualizing them within over a century of restricted Palestinian access to the sea and Israel’s control of over 80% of the historical Palestinian coastline since 1948.
The lecture will be moderated by Adrià Reyes, Executive Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Diplomacy and International Organisations at CEI/UB, which co-organises the session.
Prof. Qafisheh is a former Human Rights Officer with the UN and has advised multiple international organizations, including the UN and the PLO. He is also chair of the Board of Trustees of UK-based Law for Palestine Organization and deputy president of the Palestinian Research Council. His work spans international law, human rights, humanitarian law, migration, and the law of the sea.
The event is open to the public.
