Background:
In a world covered for more than two-third in marine water, understanding the way States regulate maritime spaces and activities is key to achieve international peace and security, and to effectively address some of the biggest challenges of the 21st century, including climate change and biodiversity loss.
This series of high-level workshops will provide a short introduction and technical overview of the Law of the Sea (LOS), namely the corpus of rules of Public International Law governing the world’s oceans and seas. The workshops will examine the fundamentals of the LOS, including its modern jurisdictional architecture as codified in the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and will explore some of the technical areas which either directly or indirectly depends on the LOS implementation, such as the conservation and management of marine resources and ecosystems, navigational rights and freedoms, human rights at sea, and maritime boundary delimitation. Finally, the workshops will provide participants with an international and multidisciplinary toolbox to reflect on the role of Palestine as a maritime State, as well as to strengthen an informed dialogue on the way the LOS sources and fora could be used to improve maritime peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The workshops will benefit from the active participation and contribution of LOS academics and practitioners, including experts from Palestine, Egypt and Lebanon. The initiative will contribute to building capacity and knowledge-sharing among Palestinian and international scholars and researchers with the view of filling the institutional gap existing in Palestinian Universities with regard to the teaching of the LOS and related matters.
