On the subject of the panel discussion:
At this webinar, the Forum will address a very controversial legal issue that has been discussed among legal academics and experts in books, academic research, and scientific articles. The issue under debate is whether international law could be used as a pathway for bringing justice to the oppressed (for example, in Palestine), or is it just a way to distract them in order to maintain control over them?
At this webinar, we seek to raise a legal debate on this issue and try to answer the following questions:
- Is international law part of the solution or part of the problem with regard to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict?
- Is international law only a tool at the hands of the powerful or a tool of justice for all? (Power versus Justice Dilemma, where to draw the line?)
- Can international law end the occupation in Palestine?
- How can international law work towards achieving better justice for Palestine?
The panel discussion Guest:
To raise this important debate, The Forum hosts an international expert who specifically addressed this issue in her recent book in 2019, entitled “Justice for Some : Law and the Question of Palestine”, ” which won several international awards,
- Noura Erakat : An international Palestinian-American human rights attorney, an assistant professor at Rutgers University in the USA, and a non-resident visiting fellow at Harvard University. Dr. Erakat is a co-founding editor of “Jadaliyya” electronic magazine, and a policy advisor to “Al-Shabaka” website. Dr. Erakat has also served as a legal counsel to a subcommittee at the US House of Representatives, and as a Middle East consultant to one of the members of the Congress. Dr. Erakat has published a wide range of academic and semi-academic articles in international and Arab journals and platforms. This is in addition to two books : “Justice for Some : Law and the Question of Palestine”, published in 2019, laureate of several international and Arab awards, and “Aborted State? The UN Initiative and New Palestinian Junctures” Co-edited with Mouin Rabbani, published in 2013. Dr. Erakat is a regular guest to western and eastern channels such as CNN, BBC, NBC, Fox News, Aljazeera Arabic and English, etc.
The discussion will be moderated by :
- Abdelghany Sayed : A legal expert and a PhD researcher and teaching assistant at Kent Law School in the United Kingdom. He has previously worked in legal research and analysis on several occasions, such as; for the office of the prosecutor of International Criminal Court, the office of the Egyptian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Cooperation, and for UNICEF’s Justice for Children Programme in Egypt. Sayed holds a bachelor’s degree in law from Ain Shams University in Cairo (2011), And an LLM from the University of Essex, United Kingdom (2015).
